How Would Celtic and Rangers Do In The Premier League?

As two of the biggest clubs in the world and not just in Britain, Celtic and Rangers fit that mould. Especially Celtic, who have been to the pinnacle of football multiple times and are well-known around the world. With the stature of these two clubs, the question of how they would do in the Premier League is something that has always been asked of how they would do. This is a great question and a question that is asked fairly often.

I think you will get many answers to these questions and this is dependent on who you ask.  Celtic or a Ranger fan would answer with a hint of bias and confidence but I feel if you asked any of the Premier League clubs they would answer more brutally. The general consensus for most football fans and the football betting odds UK would probably have them as favourites to get relegated and I think it can go either way.

I think the first way to do this is to do a section on them staying up and a section on them going down then coming to my main conclusion.

Staying up

Around two decades ago before the Premier League became the richest league in the world, there was chatter about the Old Firm clubs being a top 4 club in the Premier League and now we are here discussing relegation and it being a possibility for them. I think if Celtic and Rangers had the smart financial backing that the teams in England had then they would do a good job and it would definitely be a closer conversation. I think the in staying up Celtic have a better chance of staying up because their squad is better and they have more recent experience in the bigger games like with the Champions League. However, in 2022 Rangers were very close to winning the Europa League and although they didn't, it is still a good sign.

Relegation Chances

I think that their chances are weaker today compared to a few years ago. When Steven Gerrard was in charge of Rangers and Ange was in charge of Celtic, their chances were a lot higher. Their squads were stronger, they had managers who had an identity and could control the characters and get results. Now all the teams in the Premier League have improved and the teams are spending more and playing better football while Celtic and Rangers are regressing, which is a sad sight to see.

One thing about the Scottish league is the level of it and the skill gap. The worst team in the Premier League would probably be able to win or come close to winning the Scottish Premiership and this shows the standard. The one saving grace is the fact that these two are far ahead of every other club in the league.

My Thoughts

Now going into my personal thoughts, I think that they would both be in the relegation scraps for the season and one would survive but even then I'm unsure. The difference between the two leagues is so drastic and the football standard is a little different. I would obviously love it if Celtic and Rangers came into the Premier League and finished mid-table and proved a lot of people wrong.

However, I'd be lying if I said I was confident. The main issue now is the standard of playing and the regression of the two best teams in Scotland. Over recent years they have seen massive highs and played incredibly well but in the season just gone they both started to play really badly, even though Celtic won the league with 93 points, and they can't do that in the Premier League. Overall, I think The old firm teams would not last longer than two seasons.
